Antiochian women have decided to raise money for needy families for Christmas to buy gifts for their children.  Sheli Fadel has suggested a family of 8 with great need who will benefit.  There will be a paper angel for $1.00 EA to put on the Christmas tree.  Angels will be availabe shortly for sale.  Let's decorate the Christmas tree filled with angels!  We will post a date for making the angel after Thanksgiving.

Octoberwas Breast Cancer Awareness month and the women of St. George wish to acknowledge the women of our parish who have been stricken by this disease and to celebrate their survivorship!

Lenten Recipe LENTEN RAISIN CAKE...it's my mom's specialty.....they used to make it for the boys in WW2 and send it overseas, since it has no butter or eggs, it keeps long, like a fruitcake....will keep for months in refrig....I always make it for lenten suppers and now all the girls at church make it too, at least in montreal, you will be the first here in the midwest! It's also called "war cake" 1 lb. raisins
2 c. boiling water
1 tbsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. cold water
4 c. flour
2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. walnuts, chopped

Simmer the raisins and the boiling water for 15 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients. Bake in a tube pan, at 325 degrees, for about 1 hour, or until well browned. This cake is called "War Cake" because there are no eggs, butter, or milk among the ingredients, items often in short supply during war time. It is a family favorite, a very good cake. Lenten Recipe Send your favourite recipe to tallen@pei.sympatico.ca Veggie Burgers 1 – 1 ½ tbsp olive oil
1 ½ cup red onion, chopped
1 cup celery, chopped
3 medium-large cloves garlic, finely chopped
¼ tsp sea salt, pepper to taste
2 cups cooked brown rice
1 ½ cups cooked adzuki or black beans
2 ½ tbsp ketchup
2 tbsp good quality BBQ sauce
1 ½ tsp Dijon mustard
1-1 ½ tsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
¼ tsp sea salt
1½ cups good quality breadcrumbs
2 Tbsp olive oil [for frying] In a skillet over medium heat, heat the oil. Add the onion, celery, garlic, sea salt, and pepper. Cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions and clery start to soften. In a food processor combine the onion mixture with the remaining ingredients [except the breadcrumbs and frying oil] and puree gently, pulsing to combine but leaving some texture. Add the breadcrumbs and pulse again a couple of times to combine. Transfer mixture to a bowl, and stir through to fully work in breadcrumbs. Refrigerate for at least ½ hour [chilling will make it firmer and easier to form]. Take scoops of the mixture and form into patties with your hands.
In a skillet over medium heat, heat the oil. Add the patties in batches, and fry for 6-9 minutes on each side, until golden and a crust has developed; flip them over only once or twice [the second side will cook quicker than the first].
